Coniston Old Man
This mountain has to be one of our favourites in the
Lake District for views, as on a clear day you can see straight across the Irish Sea to Snowdonia. There are a number of quieter routes up the mountain which avoid the crowds, and there are many neighbouring mountains that can be added on for the more adventurous amongst you.
Possible routes
- The normal route: This is the shortest and easiest option, at only 6km and with around 700m of ascent. The route works its way past some disused quarries on the southern side of the mountain and there are great views to the south for the entirety of the ascent.
- Via Goat's Water: Marginally longer than the above option, this route is slightly more secluded and takes in the picturesque Lakeland tarn of Goat's Water, an ideal place for the perfect picnic on a sunny day.
- Via Levers Water and Swirl How: Stay away from the crowds and take in the fantastic ridge from Swirl How to the summit of Coniston Old Man as well.
